LolaMora
LolaMora Producciones is an independent project inside WorldCom formed by women involved in journalism, information and media technology, training and investigation.
LolaMora was born in the South; it could not have been any other way. After a journey through the Rif North of Morocco and many testimonies taken from old and new emigrants... We reached the Other Shore of the Mediterranean, where we came up with the name for the multimedia production company.
The women that form LolaMoras production company work to produce information-communication which shows the diversity and complexity of all facts and phenomena that surround us. LolaMora Producciones is based on the notion that there is a general need for responsible media sensitized to social issues.
To generate ideas and to favour the exchange of experiences and knowledge, we carry out: research, radio and video productions, advocacy and lobby campaigns and workshops for journalists. Under the shadow of the multimedia productions, we are looking for producing and broadcasting debates, so that some subjects do not remain abstract, but they provoke a public reaction and useful bridges between civil society and media. LolaMora wants to create images originating from and with The Others; to break stereotypes and to pass on realities from different-angles-different-positions. Any topic is subject to dissection; any concept to deconstruction.
We propose the construction of images from the work of audiovisual media from the North and the South, the South and the South We want to transmit those contrary realities. LolaMora Producciones is a Worldcoms Foundation project, a Dutch organization dedicated to communication for development.
However, there was already another Lola Mora in the XIX century, a woman also divided between two shores, this time those of the Atlantic Ocean. A transgressor, she fought against the conventions of her time. She was the first South American sculptress; pioneer, inventor, researcher and urban developer; writer and forerunner on cinematography and TV. Lola Mora lived in Italy until she decided to return to her native Argentina, where the sensuality of her work and her bisexuality gained her numerous enemies.
Finished projects-ideas for the future
As members of Worldcoms Foundation we participate of the communication for development projects in Africa and in Latin America; as well as we do research and radio and photography projects.
Among the productions made by the journalists at LolaMora, stand out two radio productions in Spanish, produced by Radio Nederland Wereldomroep.
- Palestines and Israelites: two people and one land. A series, which won the golden medal at the New York Festival in 2004 and a honour mention at the Bienal de Radio de México, 2004.
- Emigrating whatever it takes: a series of 8 chapters focusing on the migration of Mahgribians and Sub-Saharans to Europe through the Straits of Gibraltar, which won a honour mention at New York Festival in 2005.
We are currently working on a multimedia campaign. The Project aims at initiating awareness raising; advocacy and lobby campaigns (radio, video and photography) regarding sexual violence against women -used as a tool of war- and the role of the International Criminal Court on this matter. With the launch of this campaign, we aim to open debates in local radios and between radio networks of Latin America-Africa-Europe; and do trainings workshops for journalists and civil society to talk and discuss the role of ICC and the changes that national laws must undertake. This project is an idea carries out by Humanas Chile and LolaMora producciones.
We also are members of the Almazara Network of journalists and civil society organisations in the Mediterranean area interested in practising investigative, cross-border and quality journalism, with special focus on international migrations.
